2018 - YEAR IN REVIEW

2018 WAS YET ANOTHER YEAR FILLED WITH ADVENTURES, TRIPS AND EXPLORATIONS AROUD ALASKA. IT WAS A YEAR OF MOSTLY VISITING FAMILIAR LOCATIONS ASIDE FROM A COUPLE NEW EXPLORATIONS. ON THIS PAGE YOU'LL FIND WHERE MY ADVENTURES HAVE TAKEN ME. IT'S A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK INTO MY PHOTOGRAPHY.

ALYESKA & TURNAGAIN PASS

IN THE BEGINNING OF 2018 I THREW A BACHELOR PARTY TO ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS. HIM AND ANOTHER FRIEND FLEW TO ALASKA TO BACKCOUNTRY SKI AND CELEBRATE. WE RENTED A CABIN AND SPENT FOUR DAYS CHASING THE POWDER AROUND GIRDWOOD. ALYESKA IS ALWAYS A GREAT PLACE TO PHOTOGRAPH, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE VALLEY BELOW GETS SOME FOG OVER IT LIKE IT DID WHEN WE WERE THERE.

WE DID ALL THE BACKCOUNTRY SKI TOURING IN OUR "HOME BACKCOUNTRY MOUNTAINS", TURNAGAIN PASS. THE PEAKS CALLED EDDIES, TINCAN AND SUNBURST SERVED US WELL AND GAVE US PLENTY OF UNTRACKED POWDER. WE EVEN GRILLED SAUSAGES ON TINCAN BY BRINGING A DISPOSABLE GRILL. WE ALSO HAD A FIRE ON THE PARKING LOT AFTER THE DAY OF SKIING TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE EXPERIENCE.

PORTAGE GLACIER

I MADE MY ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE TO PORTAGE GLACIER THIS TIME AROUND IN THE BEGINNING OF MARCH. IT'S A MUST AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR BUT USUALLY I FIND MYSELF THERE SEVERAL TIMES EVERY YEAR. THE SETTING WAS AS BEAUTIFUL AS EVER AND THE JOURNEY TO GET THERE WAS CALM AND PEACEFUL.

PAXSON

OUR ANNUAL SKI TRIP WAS SCHEDULED FOR THE END OF MARCH LIKE IT IS EVERY YEAR. AND JUST LIKE EVERY YEAR, THIS TIME FRAME BROUGHT BAD SNOW CONDITIONS AGAIN. WE SWITCHED THE DESTINATION AT THE LAST MINUTE FROM THOMPSON PASS TO PAXSON HOPING FOR BETTER CONDITIONS THAT NEVER DELIVERED. SUCH IS THE BEAUTY OF AN RV TRIP THOUGH. WE ENDED UP WITH A LOT OF ATTEMPTS TO SKI BUT MOSTLY ENJOYED THE AURORA DISPLAYS AND PLAYING CARDS IN THE RV. SOMEHOW WE MANAGED TO MAKE THIS INTO MY FAVORITE "SKI" TRIP SO FAR.

GIRDWOOD

HOME OF THE  NORTHERNMOST RAIN FOREST IN THE WORLD

MATANUSKA GLACIER

I COULD CALL THIS MY SECOND HOME I GUESS, THAT'S HOW MANY TIMES I'VE BEEN TO MATANUSKA GLACIER. I ALSO DID PROPOSE (2014) AND GET MARRIED (2016) ON IT SO I GUESS IT REALLY IS MY SECOND HOME IN A WAY. THIS YEAR I VISITED FOUR TIMES.

ANCHORAGE

ANCHORAGE IS A PRETTY WILD PLACE IN ITSELF. THE MOUNTAINS START RIGHT IN TOWN AND HAVE CHALLENGING PEAKS. THE PARKS RIGHT IN TOWN INHABIT BEARS AND MOOSE.

CHUGACH MOUNTAINS

CHUGACH IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MOUNT RANGES I'VE EVER SEEN, ESPECIALLY THE NORTHEASTERN SIDE OF IT. I'LL PHOTOGRAPH IT FROM DIFFERENT LOCATIONS AS LONG AS I LIVE IN ALASKA.

TURNAGAIN ARM

HAVING TURNAGAIN ARM SO CLOSE TO HOME IS ONE OF THE REASONS TO LIVE IN ALASKA. THESE STUNNING VIEWS NEVER GET OLD AND IT'S ONLY ABOUT A FIFTEEN MINUTE DRIVE AWAY. I'VE PHOTOGRAPHED THERE OVER HUNDRED TIMES OVER THE YEARS BUT I NEVER REALLY PHOTOGRAPHED PEOPLE SURFING THE BORE TIDE. IF YOU CATCH THE WAVE, YOU CAN RIDE THIS NORTHERNMOST BORE TIDE CONTINUOUSLY FOR MILES UP TO 24MPH! IT IS ONE OF THE LONGEST TIDAL WAVES IN THE WORLD.

TALKEETNA MOUNTAINS

THE JAGGED PEAKS OF THE TALKEETNA MOUNTAINS DRAW ME BACK TIME AND TIME AGAIN. I'LL ALWAYS FIND SOMETHING TO DO HERE, WHETHER IT'S PHOTOGRAPHY, BACKCOUNTRY SNOWBOARDING OR MOUNTAIN BIKING. I MADE A FEW PHOTOGRAPHY EXPLORATIONS THERE WITH MY MOUNTAIN BIKE BY MYSELF AND FOUND SPOTS I HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE THAT WERE STUNNING. I ALSO VENTURED OUT TO BACKCOUNTRY SNOWBOARD AND SPENT THE NIGHT IN EARLY WINTER AT ONE OF MY FAVORITE BACKCOUNTRY HUTS TWICE.

BYRON GLACIER

THE ICE CAVES OF BYRON GLACIER HAVE NOT BEEN THE SAME AS A FEW YEARS AGO. THEY STILL EXIST BUT THEY ARE LESS EXCITING. I GO HERE EVERY EARLY WINTER TO CHECK THEM OUT.

TURNAGAIN PASS

THE MOST ACCESSIBLE, YET FUN BACKCOUNTRY SKI MECCA FOR THE ANCHORAGE RESIDENTS. THIS IS WHERE I SPEND A LOT OF MY FREE TIME SKIING THESE MOUNTAINS.

TALKEETNA

I ENDED THE YEAR ON A HIGH NOTE BY NESTLING NEXT TO THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN NORTH AMERICA AND LARGEST (BASE TO TOP)  MOUNTAIN IN THE WORLD, DENALI. WE RENTED CABINS IN TALKEETNA AND STAYED THERE OVER THE HOLIDAYS. WHAT A GREAT END TO A GREAT YEAR.
